ECU Remapping FAQ
50 common questions about chip tuning, Stage 1 & Stage 2 remaps, mobile service, warranty, legality and booking, answered by 24Tuning Bournemouth.
ECU Remapping FAQ Index for Dorset and the UK
This page is the central FAQ for 24Tuning customers researching chip tuning, Stage 1 and Stage 2 remaps, mobile appointments, warranty, legality and booking. The interactive groups below answer the questions we hear most often from Bournemouth, Poole, Southampton and nationwide callers. Beneath that, use the topic hubs to open deeper FAQ sets for cars, vans, marine craft, diesel repairs, ECU hardware, the shop and the installer programme.
Answers here are written in plain British English by the same team that calibrates vehicles daily. We favour honest limits over sales language. If a job is unsafe, illegal for UK roads, or better solved with mechanical repair, we say so. Typical Stage 1 remapping starts from £199. Bookings can be secured with a £50 deposit. Call 01202 503 328 when you need a human answer for a specific registration.

Safety, Diagnostics and What We Refuse
Remapping is safe when the engine and transmission are healthy and the calibration respects mechanical limits. Every 24Tuning appointment begins with an OBD diagnostic health check. Active fault codes, unresolved misfires, failing turbos or clogged emissions hardware on a road going vehicle will pause the remap until the underlying issue is understood. We would rather lose a sale than flash software onto a broken powertrain.
We diagnose and repair AdBlue, DPF, EGR and NOx systems. Stage 1 remaps on standard road cars leave emissions systems intact. If a warning light or regen fault is the real problem, say so before you book.
Booking, Timing and Mobile Coverage
Most Stage 1 mobile remaps take one to two hours at your driveway or workplace, including diagnostics, backup, flash and verification. Stage 2 work can take longer when hardware must be assessed. We cover Bournemouth and Poole as home territory, with regular routes across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire, plus nationwide appointments for fleets and special cases. Marine visits are arranged at marinas and storage yards by appointment.
Use online booking to secure a date with a deposit, or contact us for a quote. The homepage vehicle search shows estimated gains for many platforms. If your exact engine is missing, send the registration and we will confirm compatibility.
Warranty, Insurance and Reversion to Stock
Software we supply carries a 4 year warranty against malfunctions in the calibration itself when the vehicle stays in the supported configuration, plus a 30 day money back guarantee (T&Cs apply). Original factory maps are backed up so we can restore stock settings before a dealer visit, lease return or sale. We recommend declaring a remap to your insurer. Many insurers accept ECU remapping when it is disclosed. We can provide documentation of the work completed.
Manufacturer warranties can be affected if a dealer discovers non factory software. That is a commercial reality we discuss openly rather than hide. Plenty of customers remap after warranty expiry. Others restore stock temporarily when a warranty claim is active, then return to the 24Tuning map afterwards.
Still Stuck After Reading?
Open the interactive groups on this page for quick answers, then follow the topic hub that matches your vehicle. For model specific depth, move into the related service hubs such as car remapping, van remapping hub or marine remapping. Stage 1 versus Stage 2, van remap costs and towing calibrations are covered on those hubs and the FAQ groups above.
Performance, Economy and Towing Goals Compared
Many callers ask which product to choose before they ask how a flash works. Performance Stage 1 suits drivers who want stronger mid range pull and sharper throttle on a healthy standard vehicle. Economy remapping suits daily driven cars and fleets where fuel burn dominates the monthly cost sheet. Towing focused calibrations prioritise stable low and mid range torque for caravans, horseboxes and plant trailers rather than peak dyno figures.
Stage 2 only enters the conversation when supporting hardware is present or firmly planned. Gearbox TCU remapping joins the package when automatic or DSG shift quality must match the new engine torque. Marine and bike goals are different again: throttle predictability and thermal margin often matter more than a single horsepower headline. If two goals conflict, tell us your priority order and we will recommend a single coherent map strategy.
Tools, Backups and Aftercare in Plain Terms
We use professional platforms such as Alientech KESS3, Autotuner, CMD and Dimsport equipment matched to the ECU in front of us. Original maps are stored so reversion to stock remains possible for dealer visits, lease returns or sale. Aftercare covers software issues related to the calibration we supplied when the vehicle stays in the supported configuration. If you change turbo hardware later, say so before expecting the old map to behave perfectly.
Documentation can be provided for insurers. Dyno appointments on the Dynocom 15000FX are a separate measured proof product with a waiting list. Most daily drivers never need dyno time to enjoy a well written Stage 1 map verified on the road across Bournemouth and Dorset routes.
Answers in Brief
Is remapping safe? Yes when diagnostics pass and the map respects mechanical limits. Will it fail an MOT? A proper Stage 1 on a standard road vehicle should not, and we do not disable emissions systems for UK highway use. How long does it take? Usually one to two hours for Stage 1 mobile work. Can it be reversed? Yes, from the backed up factory file. Do you travel? Yes across Bournemouth, Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire and nationwide by arrangement.
Those five answers cover most first calls. Everything else on this page and in the topic hubs exists for edge cases: marine berths, fleet rollouts, locked ECUs, Stage 2 hardware builds, and installer applications. If your question is missing, call 01202 503 328 with the registration and we will add clarity rather than guess.
