Swirl flaps (also called runner flaps or intake runner control valves) are small butterfly valves inside the inlet manifold on many modern diesel and petrol engines. At light load they close so incoming air swirls into the combustion chamber. That swirl helps combustion, emissions and low-speed torque.
Above roughly 2000 rpm the flaps usually sit fully open. At that point they add little and can restrict airflow if they are stuck, dirty or half closed. EGR gas and crankcase oil vapour coat the flaps over time — short trips around Bournemouth and Poole accelerate that carbon build-up.
A light manifold clean can buy time. When the same flap code returns, the actuator has failed, or a flap has broken in the port, owners start searching for swirl flap delete Dorset or swirl flap repair Bournemouth options instead of another dealer manifold bill.
