Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) sends a measured amount of exhaust back into the intake. That inert gas lowers peak combustion temperature so less nitrogen oxide (NOx) forms. On modern diesels an EGR cooler often sits in the loop to bring those gases down before they re-enter the engine.
The drawback is soot. Recirculated exhaust carries carbon that coats the valve, cooler, intake ports and swirl flaps. Short trips around Bournemouth and Poole accelerate that build-up. Valves stick open or closed, coolers crack and leak coolant, and later common-rail setups add flaps, solenoids and sensors that throw their own codes when they fail.
A light clean or a new valve can buy time. When the same EGR fault returns every few months, owners start searching for EGR delete Dorset or EGR removal Bournemouth options instead of another dealer bill.
